IPOH Starwalk 2010 participants will get Vitamin C tablets and herbal tea, courtesy of Hovid Bhd.

Hovid’s corporate communications executive Ng Chern Yuan said walkers would be given a pack of sugar-free Chewette C tablets and a sachet of HYH Herbal Tea.
“The top three winners in each group of the competition category will also receive a Hovid goodie bag with health supplements worth RM130 per bag,” she said after presenting the items to The Star’s advertisement representative Tan Cheak Tong at Hovid Bhd’s office on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Ipoh last Thursday.
Hovid’s national sales manager Thomas Wong said the sponsorship was worth a total of RM28,000.



“We have been very supportive of Ipoh Starwalk since it started six years ago.
“The event is a fun family activity associated with health and this is in line with Hovid’s mission to lead people to a healthier and better life with health food supplements,” Wong said.
Pinang Medical Supplies (PMS) Sdn Bhd is sponsoring RM6,000 worth of items, including 10 pairs of Crocs Rx shoes, three units of digital BP set, five pairs of Oppo Silicon heel pads and five pairs of Sorbson heel pads.
Its sales administration staff member Wong Wai Kheng said among the other items sponsored were cooling scarves, a digital thermometer, a wireless thermometer and a Bidet shower.


“Participants will also get a RM20 Crocs cash voucher and a 20% discount voucher for selected products in their goodie bag,” Wong said before handing over the sponsorship to The Star’s Shireen Yong last Friday.
Ipoh Starwalk 2010, which will be flagged off from 7am on June 6 at Stadium Indera Mulia, is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Ipoh City Council with the co-operation of the Perak Government, Perak Amateur Athletics Association and Perak Education Department in conjunction with Ipoh city’s 22nd anniversary.
All participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag while those who complete the walk within 100 minutes will be eligible for a lucky contest that offers attractive prizes.

Kota Kinabalu: Researchers have established that there is a positive relationship between breast cancer and palm oil.

Palm oil is one of the 16 major oils being traded in the world’s edible oils and fats market.

Chief Executive Officer cum Managing Director of IJM Plantations Berhad, Joseph Tek Choon Yee said a lot of research has been done on palm oil in relation to breast cancer because it contains Vitamins A and E, and it has been found that palm oil has anti-cancer properties.


“Palm-oil is something that we take for granted. Actually, it is rich in two types of Vitamin E: Tocopherols and Tocotrienols. Tocotrienols are found in abundance in palm-oil. In fact, no other vegetable oil has as much Vitamin E compared with palm oil.

“Tocotrienols have been shown to inhibit the proliferation and growth of human breast cancer cells in vitro (that is, in the lab).

“And in research in vivo (involving animals) 15 years ago, tocotrienols were found to be able to inhibit breast cancer cell growth in a rat model.

“Internationally, researchers in Malaysia, Singapore and elsewhere have over the years moved towards research done on human beings with breast cancer, which is clinical research,” he told the recent Public Forum on Breast Health Awareness held at Wisma Wanita here.

On treatment for breast cancer, Tek said the doctor may prescribe Tamoxifen for Stage One and Stage Two of the disease as this powerful drug has the ability to block the cancer cells.

According to him, Dr Kalanithi Nesaratnam, a researcher with the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), and her team have been working on clinical research on breast cancer for the last six years.

They have used tocotrienols in their pilot clinical trial conducted in Malaysia.

“Basically, the doctor has 240 patients in the KL Hospital with Stage One or Stage Two breast cancer. They are divided into two groups, one with an average age of 48 and the other 49. In one group, the racial composition is well-distributed with 50 per cent Malays, 30 per cent Chinese and 20 per cent Indians.

“One group (120) was given Tamoxifen only without Vitamin E (tocotrienols). The other (120) had Tamoxifen intake together with the use of tocotrienols.

“After many years, her finding is that there were only two deaths for those who were given Tamoxifen with tocotrienols (Vitamin E) while there were six deaths among those who received only Tamoxifen without the Vitamin E (tocotrienols),” Dr Tek explained.

He said the anti-cancer properties of tocotrienols have been documented and published in scientific literature, adding that research is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Tek said the Vitamin E in tocopherols and tocotrienols is a powerful anti-oxidant that fights free radicals in the body.

“It is capable of reducing the harmful types of oxygen molecules (free radicals) in the body. This means it may help to protect you from certain chronic diseases while delaying the body’s ageing process.

“And research, be it in Malaysia, Australia or Europe, has also shown that palm olein reduces blood cholesterol,” he said, adding another study shows that tocotrienols in palm oil protect brain cells.

Tek lamented that palm-oil has many benefits that the public are not aware of.

“Palm-oil has multiple uses. While 90 per cent is used for food, the rest is utilised for the production of cosmetics such as lipstick, and for biofuel such as biodiesel, among other products.” Sabah, he noted, is blessed as a palm-oil producing state, and has one-third of the total hectarage for oil-palm in Malaysia.

“It has contributed significantly to the economy and in terms of employment opportunities.” Of the 180 countries in the world, some 160 use Malaysian palm-oil, according to him.


Tracing the palm-oil story, Tek said it began to be used as food 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

“Oil-palm is an interesting fruit because you can get two types of oil from it, that is, crude palm oil (CPO for cooking oil and margarine) and crude palm kernel oil. Each has a different composition and properties.

Cooking oil is refined and deodourised from CPO.”

On why IJM, a plantation-based company, is involved in breast health awareness, Tek said it is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

“Apart from our core business which is related to oil-palm plantation, we promote conservation, education, cultural development and sports for school-children.”

Given the increasing prevalence of breast cancer in women and also men, he said IJM plans to hold a similar forum in Tawau next year.

“Men must also learn about to do breast-self examination (BSE).

We want to bring awareness to more people with focus on schoolgirls and even schoolboys. That is the way forward for us.”

The forum was organised by Kinabalu Pink Ribbon in collaboration with IJM Plantations Berhad, Sabah Women’s Affairs Department (Jhewa) and Reach to Recovery (RTR).
